Geraldine Barney's art explores the relationship between traditional Navajo values & beliefs with contemporary city life. Straddling two cultures is a prominent theme in her art.
Geraldine’s latest series of mixed media collages, begin with designs on paper using various print-making techniques. These designs are treated with other media such as paint, ink, stitching etc. then collaged to create complex layered imagery. Finished works re-interpret traditional Navajo motifs and evoke Navajo textiles in paper form. Other themes depict landscapes from the Navajo reservation through acrylic painting.
Geraldine studied printmaking at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM and at the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO.
