I love working with beads because they afford me a means of self-expression that has infinite possibilities. I am drawn to beads because they come in every color of the rainbow and beyond, because they sparkle and come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes.

I love “playing” with beads – by combining bright colors, shapes and textures, I can create designs that are unique, fun and playful. I do not stick to one style or design – I love to experiment with patterns, and the result is versatile jewelry that can be worn for any occasion.

All of my pieces are hand fabricated, including bracelets, earrings and necklaces. I also create hair accessories in the form of barrettes and bobby pins. I use a variety of materials, including crystal, Czech glass, freshwater pearls, seed beads, semi-precious stones, and silver and gold accents.

Kasey Davis Appleman is a collector, assembler, painter, photographer, and arts educator. She finds inspiration through her love of nature and her obsession with collecting antiques, miniatures and the “found object.” Her art captures the beauty of texture, the mystery of assembling and the quirky happenstance of objects and nature. Driftwood, metal, glass, paper remnants, broken bits, and other precious “finds” bring her mixed media to life. Visit her HOME STUDIO at 9 Lindall Street to see mixed media assemblage and photography.

Geraldine Barney is a visual artist and singer/songwriter originally from Northwest New Mexico, the eastern part of the Navajo Nation. Geraldine’s work explores the relationship between the traditional Navajo values and
beliefs she grew up with on the Navajo Reservation and contemporary city life off the reservation. Straddling two cultures is a prominent theme inn both her art and music. She exhibits and performs her art & music to both local and national audiences. Geraldine currently resides in Roslindale.

Her latest series of artwork, mixed media collages, begin with designs on paper created through various print-making techniques such as etching, silk screen, linocut, and monoprint. These original designs are then cut or
treated with other media such as paint, ink, stitching etc. and collaged together to create complex layered imagery and patterns. Finished works often re-interpret traditional Navajo motifs and evoke Navajo textiles in paper form. Other themes depict landscapes from the Navajo reservation through traditional methods such as watercolor and acrylics.

Geraldine studied printmaking at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri.

Bird Street’s Boys Glass Entrepreneur Program is designed to introduce middle school boys to the arts, to entrepreneurship and to emotional and social wellness. The boys sign a year long contract to participate in an intensive, 40-hour per week summer training for 7 weeks and two nights a week during the school year. Together, with our partner Diablo Glass Studio, the boys become master glass blowers and outstanding salesmen for their beautiful, one-of-a-kind art objects. The program requires the boys to focus on school, the future and on becoming an artist of note.

Clay comes from the earth. Picking up a piece, you feel its texture, contour, weight, edges, temperature and everything else you get from holding something that came from the earth. Holding the piece, it can be like an animal you feel something for, or even like something from which you want to back away. It may remind you of something else, or make you think of something you haven't noticed before. You might go away and remember it later. Maybe you'll think about something you've made before or want to make, now. I thought about clay for a long time before I had the chance to finally engage with it. Now years later it is still what brings pretty much everything together for me. It's a creative experience that doesn't really have an end, and not even always a clear start.

I build pieces from stoneware slab rolled from 25-pound blocks of clay. I make wall pieces, flower sconces, large bowls, platters, trays and trivets. I alter the clay's surface with tools, old things found here and there, and everyday objects. I may plan a piece from a full slab, or from large and small scraps left from building other pieces.

I am a local JP/Roslindale artist who has been painting on and off for about 30 years. I have no formal training, other than intermittent adult ed classes and rare workshops, but have been persistent in my desire to paint . Working in public health as a physician assistant in the Boston area, and raising a child limited my time tremendously, and at times I wouldn’t paint for months or even years. But now with my daughter in college, and no longer working full time, I have had time to paint, explore various media, and most recently attend a one week intense workshop in encaustic technique at the John Campbell Craft School in North Carolina.

I was a founding member of the old Cornwall Gallery, and past president. I have been in a number of group shows there, and co-curated a show entitled “Woman and Food”, that brought in works from the entire country.

I have had solo shows in Fresh Hair, E Mack and Bolios in both Roslindale, and Jamaica plain, and the West Roxbury library. I have been in a number of group shows with the Jamaica Plain Artists Association.

LizBeads: custom designed jewelry
The passions that inspire me to design and create jewelry include my love of colors and textures.  I love to see the sparkle and spark in natural materials.  My earthy, funky, and glittery work includes Swarovski crystal, sterling silver, pearl, glass and semi-precious stones that are natural treasures manipulated and beautified by people. Starting from raw materials each with inherent beauty, working to create each unique whole piece with love, openness to possibilities not immediately evident, mindfulness and patience is a parallel process to the work of psychotherapy which I do as my day job.

Kurtis Brown is a filmmaker and photographer who has lived and worked in Roslindale for 15 years. Kurtis' photographs can best be described as unlikely landscapes - urban, pastoral, sometimes miniature and sometimes on a grand scale, always in the form of a dialog between the figure and its surroundings.

I'll be showing two new photographic series this fall: Florascapes and Tablescapes. In addition, I hope to have ready for view a new project I'm calling 'digital assemblages', which is an outgrowth of my work as a graphic designer. Supplementing these bodies of work, will be selections from my Sacred/Mundane and Lab series (both of which are represented on my site).

In addition to being a participant in Roslindale Open Studios, I'm a senior designer at Sametz Blackstone Associates, and teach graphic design at Northeastern University. My photography attempts to engage audiences on both a formal and conceptual level; I strive to create images that are both beautiful and subtly thought provoking.

I've had a love for digital photography ever since I got my first digital camera in February of 1999. I enjoy shooting a very wide variety of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, animals, architecture, homes & interiors, botanicals, and abstract subjects. I've shot everything from cows to roller coasters, from coast to coast. I am especially inspired by colored lights (especially carnivals & fairs), unusual angles, vivid colors, extreme close-ups, and candid portraits. All my work is self-taught.

For the past 3 years, I've been experimenting with HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, which blends a range of exposures into a single image, for a sometimes surreal effect, where every aspect of the photo is perfectly exposed, with no blown-out highlights or over-darkened shadows. Nearly everywhere I go, I'm constantly scouting out my next subject. I also do all my own printing, matting, and framing. For equipment,

I've mostly used cameras by Kodak, Casio, Nikon, and Sony. Some of my best work was actually done with an Apple iPhone 4, using PRO HDR or Photosynth software. It's been said that "the best camera is the one you have with you". I live by that rule every day. I've always used a Mac for the importing, organizing, editing, and sharing of my photos.

This year, I am very excited to exhibit over 100 of my favorite images for everyone to enjoy. Something for every decor, and every budget. I hope to see you there!

My sculptures are rough and powerful yet they give an illusion of simplicity. The dominant aspect of my work is its straightforward form – an aspect that makes these pieces very friendly to the viewer. The forms are easy to approach, but the symbolism and deeper meaning subtly develop over time. I create objects with volume and openness using carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, and almost any other material I can find. With found materials, I like to push the material to the point where many viewers do not realize what the original material was. The void of the volume and the play of light and shadow on the structure of my pieces create a sensual experience when viewed from various angles. The master finishes and patina enhance the texture.

I graduated with a BA in sculpture. I am represented by L'attitude Gallery, Newbury Street, Boston, MA and Gallery North, Car

My illustrations come from my lifelong love of cartoons. Some influences on my work are: Takashi Murakami, street art, and graffiti art. I love bright colors and clean lines. I believe in the importance of making art accessible: one can look at art on a wall, wear it on a shirt, or carry it on a bag. Most importantly if someone sees my characters and is amused; mission accomplished.

James Dempsey is a natural Shaman who has been compelled to create Shamanic art for nearly 20 years.  These vibrant works depict impressions of the otherworlds that James visits on his journeys.  Working in oils and acrylic, on canvas and wood, James’ paintings appear to explode off the canvas -- and many nearly do.  Because of the nature of these works and their multi-dimensional origin this collection is called “My Summer Vacation.”

We live in a wonderful, colorful world, but the fact is it’s really a lot more colorful than what our five senses can detect. It is my hope that these pieces open you to the magic and ethereal nature of non-ordinary reality. Dream a little.

As a designer, I follow a process, a set of rules if you will, when given the charge to create built environment from my imagination. I start with a concept, which develops into detailed drawings, three-dimensional renderings and models, and eventually takes shape as a tangible object. I consider proportions, massing, composition, context, and how one might interact with my creation. I approach photography in the same way. When I encounter a scenario that interests me I begin to consciously develop my concept. I ask myself, what is the best angle (proportions and massing), composition (symmetry or asymmetry), context (what to capture in the frame), and most importantly, how one might interact with my creation. I look for spontaneous composition in both built form and in nature. The interplay of light and shadow and the distortion of scale and color add to the abstract reality portrayed in many of my photographs.

Most often I do not have my camera with me when discovering a subject to photograph, enabling me to contemplate the design process. I shoot my photographs with Nikon’s d70s and d90 digital SLR cameras and process them with Apple Aperture, iphone and Adobe Photoshop.

My sister and I design, and handcraft, one-of-a-kind, beaded, and stained glass jewelry, using mixed metals, freshwater pearls, semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystal, and Czech glass. She and I work as a team, inspiring and influencing one another, often collaborating on many of our pieces.

What began as an effort to help our 14-year-old niece raise funds for a mission trip to Peru, has now blossomed into a full-scale passion! We have been making, exhibiting and selling our work for the past three years, and have participated in numerous art ventures across Massachusetts, including, Newton Harvest Fair, Oktoberfest in Harvard Square, The International School of Boston Boutique, and The Arsenal Center for the Arts, but find Open Studios to be the most rewarding. The positive feedback from attendees, as well as the interaction and encouragement from other artists, has been a truly wonderful experience.

We are thrilled to participate in Roslindale Open Studios, again, this year, as a way to support the arts, and as a creative outlet for what has become a very happy addiction!

I took my first pottery class about 15 years ago at a community art center. In 2002 I walked out of Hamilton College with a studio art degree in ceramics. After various apprenticeships, teaching jobs, and studio manager positions, I am now able to concentrate on what I do best: making pots.

The smell of the clay and the way the light reflects in the bucket of water I dip my hands into reminds me of afternoons spent by the river. I love the rhythm of throwing. The way the time can be measured in pots thrown, or handles pulled. I love using my whole self to make pottery.

There is a pleasant ache to my muscles after a long day, but potting also requires keeping my mind busy solving the next glaze chemistry puzzle, and my eye designing the harmonious curve of the next piece to come off the wheel. All of my pottery is microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe. The glazes are food safe and lead free.

My interest in photography began during my architectural studies in college. The need to photograph conceptual and final design models introduced me to technical aspects of lighting, composition and the basics of macro photography.

While in school I took a photography class that involved developing black and white film. Shooting exclusively in black and white, I learned to find subjects with a wide range of contrast and strong textures. Over time I have gradually transitioned to digital photography. My work as a technical graphic designer has provided me experience in Photoshop in addition to knowledge of color management principles and color correction techniques, which are useful when working in the “digital darkroom”.

Robert J. Gray’s interest in fine arts began almost 70 years ago when he was 13 years old in Poland.  He has been drawing, painting, and sculpting since that time.  After retiring as a designer/illustrator from Bell Labs in 1986, he has devoted most of his time to oil painting and portraiture.  Working also in silverpoint, charcoal, pen, and watercolor, he enjoys the challenge of expanding his technique and composition with each new work.  While he finds inspiration from the old masters, he also admires the work of Annigoni, David Leffel, Burt Silverman, and Richard Schmid.  He has exhibited his work in galleries and shows in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, including the National Academy of Design and the Allied Artists of America.

I paint what I am drawn to: landscapes, gardens, but most especially water. If a moment and a place speak to me, I find that by painting it, I can dwell in that experience for an extended period of time.

Most of my art aims to be somewhat meditative, perhaps even peaceful. I am looking for that serenity to encompass not only me, but hopefully to pass to the viewer as well.

Cynthia, the creative force and passion behind Hang ‘em High Jewelry started the business in 1980, but in reality had been making pieces of jewelry since she was a young child. Her mother was a clothing designer who sold her creations in New York and Boston so Cynthia literally learned at the knees of the master. She loved pulling together elements and colorful bits of assorted materials to form a piece of art. Since that time she has created a cohesive body of work that reflects her love for the “Spirit of the Southwest” and her own American Indian heritage. Hang ‘em High Jewelry can be seen in shows and fine galleries across the United States and juried shows in New England. As well as showing at different venues, Hang ‘em High takes great pride in the fact that they participate in numerous charities - especially for the American Cancer Society fight against breast cancer, Walden Street School, Anthony Picarello Foundation and The Imus Ranch for Kids with Cancer, along with other organizations and churches. It is an essential part of Hang ‘em High’s philosophy to give back.

Signature pieces have been created specifically by Hang ‘em High Jewelry for performers, such as the lead singer of Crushed Velvet, Executive Director of the Coalition of Modern Artists, and other musicians.

I am a non-profit do-gooder by day, budding artist and entrepreneur by night and on weekends. I bought my first digital camera in 2008 as I prepared to adopt a child from Ethiopia; it seemed to me you couldn't be a parent - especially a first-time parent - without a camera! But during the wait to bring my child home, I discovered a creative passion I never knew I had. Since then, I have taught myself to shoot, print, mat, and frame my own photos, and have started a small business to sell them (and build up the kid's college fund!). I am drawn to the vibrant colors of nature, the surprise of ordinary objects viewed up close, and the grit and grandeur of urban landscapes. Every image inspires me in some way, and it is my hope that they inspire you as well.

I have always been dazzled by the beauty of the human figure; the hunch of a shoulder, the curve of a hip, the energy in a stance all subtly revealing the personality of the subject.  My challenge has always been how to capture that subtlety in the medium of black and white charcoals or acrylic paints and communicate the beauty I see to the viewer.

Since art school I have spent my time working in the business world and raising a family but after a 20 year hiatus, I have recently come back to my lifelong love of drawing and painting.  At my new home in Roslindale, you will see my recent drawings and paintings of the human figure.

Since my retirement from teaching art at schools and colleges, full attention has been given to sculpting wire lines. Wire images are "lifted' from a flat surface and one can hold and touch these lines in 3-dimensional space.

Last year at the Roslindale Open Studios event, a young person remarked: "these wire animals are like playful lines drawings." Another patron observed that the larger wire creations suspended from the ceiling: "create shadows on the walls that take on a life of their own."

Beach stones and other objects gathered from sojourns to the Maine coast are integrated into many of these wire sculptures. It all starts with color and light—evocative, beautiful, intriguing. The play of light over form—whether in still life, landscape, or figure, moves me to paint and create works that I hope will inspire and interest others as I’ve been inspired. In my figurative work, I’m captivated by the beauty and personality of each person and set out to express his or her uniqueness. As I gaze at my subject, I form a relationship with the subject where something emerges—an idea, a feeling that the person projects or perhaps I project, something interesting about the relationships between objects in a still life, or the mood of a landscape, and it is these emergent ideas and feelings that shape each work. And then always back to the sheer delight of color and light.

I’ve studied art at the Museum School and MassArt in Boston, and with Cape Cod School of Art and portraitists Cedric and Joanette Egeli. I’ve shown my work in Boston and Cape Cod, including the Thanassi Gallery in Provincetown, MA.

The complexity of my artistic creativity takes simple materials and forms and creates multilayered expressions in clay. A majority of my work is intended to evoke an impressionistic vision of space.

I have developed throwing and glazing techniques that result in very textural surfaces. The processes I use to apply glaze effect great depth and variation in color. I have perfected a method which produces very cosmic patterns in the finished work. Most of the pieces I make are hand-thrown and high-fired so they can be used in the microwave and oven, and are dishwasher safe.

Although I am primarily fascinated by landscape, in Ireland I find that the connection between the land and the people has been so intimate that I rarely see landscape devoid of human impact.  Houses and walls seem to spring from the land and fences delineate the mountains as surely as they do the small fields.  Ireland, however, is changing.  The accompaniment to prosperity and economic opportunity seems to be a diminished connection to the land.  As a result I find myself increasingly draw to “old” Ireland.  The reason is not that it is cute, idyllic, or the trite subject of tourist art.  Rather, I think that there is a larger message that appeals to me – humanity as a part, only a part, of something bigger – the natural landscape.

I paint in watercolors on a variety of surfaces, with oil and with acrylic on canvas and board.  Most of my work is Irish landscapes but I also paint on the Maine coast.

My work is heavily influenced by the natural world, the atmosphere of the space we inhabit and how the internal space of our inner life relates to it. The process is spontaneous and intuitive, using line and the qualities of the paint itself. I try to let the paint have as much say in each piece’s evolution as I do. I recently heard an artist say that, in his experience, every painting is a failure, but that each one gives hope that in the next one you have the chance to get it right. I agree with this, as each work is an exploration of mystery and contains only a fragment of the whole, and as such is incomplete. The deeply satisfying gift is the making of the work, the process of gaining a greater understanding the materials, and my world, and finding what it is that I make with them.

Lauren G. Levine has been a resident of Jamaica Plain for the last 15 years. She attended Mass College of Art from 1992-1996 with a concentration in painting. She is currently a member of the JP Artists Association, a bodyworker, weaver, and shows her work in Jamaica Plain and the Boston area.

My interest in photography started further back than I can remember, and I only know this from a picture of myself at age 5 or so, proudly holding a Kodak Instamatic camera.

Born in Ohio, and growing up in a fairly contained world, my favorite subjects were my pets, my friends, and the trees in my back yard. I took photography classes in high school and when most kids were out partying, I was working part-time jobs to pay for my photo habit. Santa filled my Christmas stocking with Kodachrome film, and my mom folded laundry around my enlarger and boxes of photo paper.

After graduating from Ohio University with a degree in Advertising, my creative energy took a turn toward graphic design. It was an enjoyable and challenging diversion, but when digital cameras became affordable, my love for photography returned with a vengeance! In the past decade,

I've been lucky to have traveled to some beautiful places and encountered some beautiful people, and both my world and my work have grown in ways I never imagined. I can only hope that I've captured the essence and spirit of these locales and cultures, and that my photos will inspire others to explore them.

I create hand crocheted and knitted bags, scarves, accessories and whatever inspires me at the moment.   My Mom taught me to knit and crochet when I was very young. I picked it up very quickly and have been knitting and crocheting for most of my life.  This is how I relax.

Over fifteen years ago I started to design fun, unique and funky handbags as gifts.  I continue to experiment with yarns and techniques and have added other designs and items to what I make. I have been selling my designs at art and craft shows and co-operative stores.

Cotton and novelty yarns are used to create fun bags and accessories.  Beads and buttons are used to embellish my work. I use wool, alpaca and blends of these yarns to create items that I felt.  I enjoy using colorful yarn and designs for my work. I also design scarves, accessories, stuffed animals, and pillows using the above materials. I enjoy trying new yarns, techniques and designs.

I have also started to make jewelry using bright, colorful anodized aluminum jump rings, neoprene o-rings, which make the jewelry stretchy, and glass beads.  My bracelets, earrings and necklaces make unique gifts for everyone!

I donate 50% of my profit equally to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Marrow.org in honor of my beloved nephew Kenneth Thomas “KT” Oxley.  He had acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and bravely fought this terrible disease for two years. He passed away on January 19, 2009.  He was 21 years old.

Inspired by the linear simplicity of architectural design, Karina Mattei’s jewelry is reminiscent of the traditional, yet is simultaneously meshed with a unique, contemporary style.

In her work Karina manipulates precious metals and colorful stones, playing with dimension and texture, striving for aesthetic, sculptural, and functional jewelry.  Often the stones dictate the outcome of a particular piece.

Presently a Brookline based jeweler/designer, Karina began as self-taught in a large, artistic family and broadened her training in Colorado and Illinois.  “As I reflect on my jewelry-making during the last twenty-five years, I enjoy the evolvement of my work.  To me it is journal-like, emulating the expansion of my environment and interests.”

Since much of her jewelry is custom-made, Karina delights in working with people in a way that involves the client in the design process, and then making a piece especially for that person.

My intention is not to copy nature but to express it in a unique vision. Sometimes I am after the energy and movement and other times the peacefulness and enveloping solitude it offers. Of special interest are human effects on nature as well as the effects of nature on humans.

Overlaying many layers of color I can build a rich surface that shows much depth. I can than choose to manipulate this surface by scraping or gouging into it with various techniques. The texturing can represent natures’ vulnerability to destruction both from natural and human causes, as well as symbolize its age and erosion.

My work is a manifestation of my primary influences, music and architecture.  These are the two fields in which I am formally trained and have spent years practicing and exploring. In my sculpture, I entertain the fluid abstractions of music while acknowledging the more functional demands of architectural form.  I am drawn to the Post-Minimalism tendency of progressive repetition to build structure and tension, thereby repeating elements like scaffolding to built form.

This artistic expression is also reflected in my series work.  This process allows me to discover several resolutions of an idea. I choose to work primarily with wood because it allows me to see my ideas quickly and therefore affords me the ability to explore.  Within the exploration, the addition of other materials such as plaster, twine, and screening enhance the expressive language inherent in my work. Ultimately, it is the exploration process that progresses and informs my work. I hope the viewer’s experience of my work is one of discovery just as the working or resolution of the piece is a discovery for me.

Hi, my name is Cyndi Monteiro.  I recently retired and I finally have enough time and energy to put into my sewing and designing.  In most recent years I have focused on quilting, but now I have the time to explore other sewing ideas that I have had for some time. My husband and I love to travel and everywhere we go I find the fabric district and bring back colorful, unique material. My studio is filled with fabric from all over the world. My husband is an artist so everywhere we go we look for stimulation from color and design in all mediums. This has greatly influenced by art in textiles.

Being at the Roslindale Farmers Market gave me a venue to display my wears and get feedback from my consumers. I created many custom orders and really enjoyed the delight in a little girl after her grandmother bought her, her first pocketbook.  A memory we will all hold dear for a lifetime! One of my featured products is “The Grammy Pillow”. Fourteen years ago I made a pillow for my grandson with material I had left over from some curtains I had made for his room.  The pillow became his dear companion and he took it to everywhere he went. After years and years of wear and washing it remains in threads. He recently asked for a new Grammy Pillow so he can break it in before college!  My line includes pocketbooks, wristlets, credit card pouches, wallets, wine bottle bags, I Pad sleeves, Kindle cases, laptop cases and eye glass cases.

I also carry health accessories including yoga bags, and eye pillows and neck pillows make with organic flax seed, rice and Lavender.
I hope to see you at Roslindale Open Studios at the Sacred Heart School group show!!

Making art comforts me, excites me, distracts me, and provides me with a network of other artists who share the same passion! I love the transparency of watercolor, the velvety look of pastels and the formation of letters in calligraphy...I take photos and love to see what can evolve from such images into art for others' eyes and walls. Be it a landscape, a still life. or the deep look of a beloved pet's features, I like the challenge of creating those images. It seems to me that color is the privilege of freedom, that my favorite exercise as an artist is inventing new ways to use it. When I think about
what I want to wear, what scarf I want to put on, what piece of jewelry I will select, I always remember the feeling I got as a young girl when I saw Dorothy click her jewel-like red shoes togetherñand I realize that early on I responded to the sparkle and shine. Mixing texture, pattern and color, I design and make glass beads with a contemporary look, inspired by this ancient tradition which dates back
hundreds of years. I love looking down into the bead, the effect of depth, resonance, or glow. Many of my works are created as collages, and

I often have a central theme in mind when designing. Whether influenced by Guernsey and Celtic knitting patterns, Africa fabrics, historic references, cut paper collages with a strikingly bold palate, or the richness of literary metaphor and symbolism, I make each bead with Moretti or Vetrafond soda-lime glass from Italy, using an Oxygen/Propane torch. To
ensure hardness, I then place them in an annealing kiln at 950 degrees while they ìslow cool.î My [http://seelenbeads.com/?page_id=97 ]signature clasps are made of etched and forged Sterling Silver.

My name is Margalit Ariella Shapiro-Katz and I am 17 years old. I have a passion for the arts. Visual arts are how I express what I am feeling and thinking. I have been creating art since I could pick up a crayon. It is deeply a part of who I am. Over the past few years I have taken photography classes at the Eliot School in Jamaica Plain with Christina Hajosy.

For over 6 years, I have been developing my drawing, painting, multi-media, and other types of art through studies with Meliss Hanes. My two favorite forms of art are acrylic painting and photography. Acrylics: I love how I can make the colors form a body or an object, how I can make a brushstroke show so much emotion. I love photography because I can capture a moment and save it. With photography, nothing in the world is boring. You can find beauty in so many places and things, beauty that you would never have guessed was there.

My photography was shown in Boston City Hall in the summer of 2010 and my photography and paintings were shown in a gallery in Ashfield, MA, in the fall of 2010. Village Books in Roslindale Square displayed my art and photography for the past three years during Roslindale Open Studios; last year, I was one of two featured young artists there.

Recently I held an art show of my work, including 85 photographs, acrylic paintings, block prints, charcoal drawings, and a room-size art installation that included a mutli-media art presentation.

I was born in Guatemala and adopted by my family here in the U.S. at the age of 4 months. I live in Roslindale with my two moms, a cat and a dog. I love animals and music of all kinds. My goal in life is to become a human rights activist. This is another passion of mine.

My artwork uses a mixture of color, texture and emotion. I love to make people happy and I live to put smiles on their faces. My inspiration comes from what I see and hear in the world. Currently my artwork is dedicated to all my family in Guatemala and to my trips to visit my homeland.

WIZARD WOODS & STILL-LIFE OBJECTS
The object reflects the voice of its own nature, whether alone or in relationship to other objects or the atmospheric space it occupies. This captured essence, like a breath on a pane of glass, is but a fleeting moment that will rarely be repeated. The light will not be the same, the mood will not be the same, etc. This is, simply, what I strive to do, namely, capture the essence of a moment in time.

I have tried to extract this same essence from Nature herself. In doing so, in the Wizard Woods photographs, I discovered magical Merlinesque scenes and enchanted King Arthurian forests. Mysterious, mythical and spiritual dimensions revealed themselves in these woods where fairytales are spun and wizards live...

I am a prodigal artist. After too many years away, I am now eagerly rediscovering the sensory pleasures of creating art: the flex of the blush, the flow of paint, the stain of ink, the fusion of color, the texture of paper, the rasp of the scissor…

Although formally trained in drawing and painting, with a BA in Art from Lafayette College, I now follow where curiosity and serendipity take me. I am experimenting with as many different media, surfaces and tools as I can, from watercolors, pastels, acrylics and inks, to collage and assemblage with found-objects, the glue gun and even my childrens’ art materials. I am inspired as much by the textures, forms and colors of nature as of paper and fabric. The variety of art and craft materials available today is an almost infinite smorgasbord: I explore widely, dine richly and have more fun than is probably good for my health! I cannot wait to taste what comes next!

I have always appreciated and collected vintage glass and one day decided to give these old, beautiful pieces a new life by creating decorative art for the home and garden.  As well as searching for the glassware, I enjoy mixing and matching the various pieces and colors together until they are transformed into a flower, bird bath, or other decorative item.

These one of a kind designs are created using depression, cobalt, ruby, and carnival glass as well as any other interesting, odd or old pieces I may find.  I also create custom pieces using glassware a client owns and loves but no longer uses.

Ever since she was a little girl, Erica von Schilgen took things apart and tried to figure out how they worked.  This childhood sense of play is still what inspires her work today.  She collects old photographs, magazines, and objects of family history and uses these along with handmade cranks and pulleys, as part of her "mechanical collages."

Erica von Schilgen received her BFA in sculpture in 2002 from Massachusetts College of Art.  The recipient of numerous awards and a member of the Collision Collective, she has contributed to many group shows including the International Association of Art Critics award winning exhibition "Picture Show" at the Photographic Resource Center (Boston, MA).  She has also shown at numerous other locations including the Cape Cod Museum of Art (Dennis, MA), Filament Gallery (Portland, ME), Jewett Arts Center at Wellesley College (Wellesley, MA), Art Interactive (Cambridge, MA), Axiom Gallery (Boston, MA), Chicago ArtSource Gallery (Chicago, IL), and the unique roving gallery Arthouse (Boston, MA).  She has been a visiting artist/lecturer at Mass. College of Art, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Boston College. Erica currently works fulltime at her studio in Jamaica Plain, MA.

I named my jewelry line Matrilinea based on the inspiration I draw from my mother and my daughter, both of whom contribute to my collection. I grew up at art fairs with my mother, who is a weaver and used to let me sell my small creations alongside her own. To pass on the legacy of self-expression my mother gave to me, I encourage my daughter’s creative spirit by doing the same.

We all enjoy kumihimo, a centuries-old form of Japanese braiding, which I use as cords for pendants and eyeglass accessories. I see jewelry as a potent means of personal expression that should make us feel beautiful and empowered, and I truly love making it. I use a variety of materials, including locally-made Czech glass, metal beads, semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals, fibers, and found objects.

The pieces—which range from elegant to funky to whimsical— are all hand-crafted with care, and no two are alike. In addition to jewelry, I offer wine glass identifiers, hair decorations, and other accessories.

To increase awareness, and to honor my mother and all breast cancer survivors and victims, I donate 5% of all proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“My artistic sensibility is a marriage between 50’s 60’s 70’s vintage colors, patterns, and textures, and late 1800’s early 1900’s Surreal /Post Modern /Minimalist schools of thought.  I gravitate towards anything that evokes these certain aesthetics.

I work on several things at a time.  I work the way an interior decorator thinks, when it comes to “composition”.  It’s hard to know when enough is enough.  I keep adding, subtracting, or layering, color, pattern, shapes, and textures, until something feels right, and therefore “done”.  I’m currently in love with liquid acrylic paint, and my father made me several light weight wood panels.  And voila!  A reason to finish a series of new paintings is born!  It’s really that simple sometimes.

There’s no intentional theme, meaning or emotion woven into my work.  I operate intuitively, and strive to stay true to my style as my life evolves, and the mediums in which I work continue to change.

These artist statements are so tricky to compose because we all have patterns, habits, rituals, likes/dislikes, lists of interests etc… But as an artist, I just find it fascinating that no matter what, this work is the stuff that comes out of me.  This is what my brain and hands want to make.  And I have to just keep going, and practice, just like anyone else, to grow and get better at what I do.”

Adrienne Yapo has been working as a graphic designer for more than 10 years and recently started Sweet Gum Studio, a design studio with capabilities in print and web design, logos, user interfaces and presentations.

In addition to graphic design, Adrienne loves designing her own creative projects for fun, display and sale, including hand-crafted jewelry, note cards, and photography. Her work is informed by her graphic design training as well as her love of nature.

Adrienne dabbled in ceramics for many years and has recently fallen in love with polymer clay. Her hand-crafted polymer-clay jewelry designs are textural, elegant, and contemporary; no two pieces are alike. She loves searching out in nature for interesting forms, patterns, and colors that then make their way into her work.

Adrienne earned a BFA in graphic design from Mass College of Art and lives and works from her studio in Roslindale.
