Peter Bates’ street and documentary-style photographs were taken in Paris, Brussels, Florence, New York, Cambridge, Boston, and Lynn. The pictures range in style from the 1981 Lynn fire to nighttime shots of neon signs. In some shots, people walk through startling environments, like a poster-strewn wall in Paris or a surreal vacant lot in Lynn. There is also the stark and spooky shot entitled “Katrina Reaches Forest Hills.”

The passions that inspire me to design and create jewelry include my love of colors and textures. I love to see the sparkle and spark in natural materials. My earthy, funky, and glittery work includes swarovski crystal, sterling silver, pearl, glass and semi-precious stones that are natural treasures manipulated and beautified by people. I need to sell jewelry in order to feed by bead habit. The beautiful bead baubles are sold in vials and packets, metals by the gram, that entice one to buy more as the price is reduced with the purchase of larger quantity. Is it dependence or abuse? No matter, customers appreciate the unique beauty as well as the reasonable prices. Starting from raw materials each with inherent beauty, working to create each unique whole piece with love, openness to possibilities not immediately evident, mindfulness and patience is a parallel process to the work of psychotherapy which I do as my day job.

awareness of brushstrokes to stimulate my imagination to create a glimpse of the mystery and beauty in the world that can be bland and not evident at times. And in the never ending learning process, hopefully connect at times with someone else¹s senses and feelings.

Ruth Feldman is a printmaker and painter. This is what she says about her art: "My work has evolved over time, from stories of people and families to work about spiritual hope and healing. It carries the message of working through despair to contentment and belief in oneself. Art making is my second career. The first career I had was as a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatry. I began art school in 1990 and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2005 .My schooling was interrupted by some tragic circumstances in my life. This tragedy has played a major part in the evolvement of my art. I had to evolve from despair to hope; as I went on this journey my work did too. I believe my art work can carry the message of ability to bring hope back into one’s life"

I work in both white and brown stoneware that is fired at either cone 6 in an electric kiln or cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln. All pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe. They range from functional (bowls, tea bowls, vases and casseroles) to altered vase forms and purely sculptural forms. Altered forms and sculptures are frequently sprayed with multiple glazes to impart a variegated patina.

www.emcdartistry.com |
Ellen McDonough is an award-winning, self-taught artist whose passion is creating 3d art that invites the viewer to a beautiful, mystical place. Her art typically features classical architecture - sometimes with angelic figures - set against a vibrantly-colored landscape scene. Though she has done sketches, paintings and mixed media art, Ellen’s preferred medium is digital painting. Digital painting is very much the same as traditional painting, except that instead of a paintbrush, Ellen paints with a stylus on a pressure-sensitive pen tablet. Ellen’s inspiration for her art comes mainly from dreams, but also from her travels to ancient, mysterious places such as Egypt, Greece, Mexico, the British Isles and the southwest. Originally from Boston, Ellen lives in the southwest during cooler months and returns to New England the rest of the year where she markets her art as prints and gallery wraps.

Glass |
suepriverdesigns.com |
A few summers ago, I started going to local juried craft fairs and fell in love with various glass items. I decided to see if I had any aptitude in making any of these types of items myself. I discovered Diablo Glass and Metal Studio in Boston and have taken classes in various glass disciplines. I discovered my niche in fused glass (warm glass) which led me to set up a glass studio at my parents' house.
In high school, I took two years of architectural and engineering design which taught me how to draw with the assistance of tools. I also started learning fine art theory and art history through my involvement on the Academic Decathlon team. My glass work combines my mechanical drawing skills with my love of classical balance and color palate which leads me to create geometric abstract art. Warm glass work incorporates both artistic vision as well as physical chemistry properties which affect the outcome of the objects as they are transformed in the kiln. The duality of warm glass appeals to me due to the complexity in creating pieces which involves both artistic vision and scientific hypotheses to bring objects to fruition.

My goal is to create unique beads and contemporary jewelry. Glass is a remarkable medium, allowing for an array of surface decorations. My fused glass jewelry is created using a variety of opaque, transparent, and dichroic glass. Several different layers are used in the first fusing, and placed in a kiln at up to 1500 degrees. The glass is removed, cut, and returned to the kiln for a second firing. The glass is then polished and may be ground or faceted to add defintion before being returned to the kiln for a final firing. I am also creating new jewelry using glass recycled from furnace work, as well as kilnworked home accessories.

Watermedia Painting |
|
I was born in a small Iowa town on the banks of the Mississippi River. I spent my childhood exploring the outdoors and daydreaming. I moved to New England where I became a professional puppeteer and wrote and illustrated a book about puppetry and stagecraft. I run dramatic arts workshops in schools where I provide art instruction, narration, sound effects and live music.
I enjoy painting with watermedia for the movement, the glazes, and the unpredictability. Most recently, I have been painting works from my imagination. I start with undifferentiated washes and textural accidents. I then develop them into compositions based on imagined mingling of basic life forms.

Images from Flourish Series.
While photography is my creative expression of choice, I think of myself as a painter who uses a lens instead of a brush—an artist who seeks to express evocative sensations that allude to intangible realities through the contradictory use of a physical image of a very tangible subject.
The foundation of my art is centered around a personal belief, and guiding principle, that we are all capable of our own healing—which begins by being in touch with our inner emotions—as our emotions act as a unique guidance system that directly informs us as to what is right or wrong for our own personal well-being. My work is focused on this theme of personal restoration, and the fundamental conviction that healing can occur when one trusts in something that cannot be seen—their spirit—a perceptible intuition that is connected to a universal source of energy.
The expression of this personal belief is shown in my Flourish series through acute magnification of nearly microscopic images that bring a newfound awareness of the subject’s unseen details and subtleties to the forefront insisting on being seen. Combined with traditionally based photographic techniques my aim is to create photographs that in some instances appear more like paintings or watercolors, and push the subject beyond its own physical boundaries into the realm of it’s essence or “spirit.”
These are not simply images of flowers—these images are the manifestation of my connection with my spirit—and my relationship to the spirit of the flower itself. By sharing myself in this way, it is my hope and intent that I introduce the viewer to something that they cannot see with their naked eye, and get them to stop and look at something that they normally might not pay any particular attention to—and in so doing ideally unite them with their own spirit.
